Phobias

Many of us have fears of objects, places and events which can unsettle
us, but most likely we’ll put down to our own silliness. You might not
like spiders very much and avoid touching them or having them near you
but you won’t have creepy crawlies on your mind all the time, the fear
only kicks in when you actually encounter one, so it doesn’t have the
power to really affect your life.
A person
with a strong fear of spiders, (arachnaphobia), will find that their
fear has the power to dominate their thoughts and control their
behaviour. They’ll be looking out for possible spider hiding places,
they’ll avoid places or activities where they might come into contact
with spiders, and on meeting one, their level of anxiety and stress
will be way out of proportion to the possible risk of harm to
themselves.
Whatever
the type of phobia a person has (see the list below) they are all
essentially the same thing, “a symbolic outward expression of an
internal anxiety”. When we have bottled-up emotions stuck inside of us
they create anxiety but, because we are not aware of these emotions’
existence as they were formed way back in our childhood, we cannot
explain away this anxiety, it is a nameless, formless, timeless
something inside ourselves but outside our own control.
The
mind finds this difficult to deal with, so projects it outside of
ourselves to a symbolic real situation or object within the
environment. Once ‘out there’ we can begin to explain our fear and go
about avoiding this thing (knives, needles, dogs, blood etc.) or this
place (cliffs, lifts, outside the front door) or this event
(travelling, speaking at a conference, going to a strange toilet), and
in this way keep us free from anxiety.
The problems come, however, when the phobia starts taking over making life difficult and unhappy.
Treating phobias
At
the Malvern Hypnotherapy Clinic I use Pure Hypnoanalysis which is a
really successful, effective treatment for phobias. Using this
empowering analytical therapy you can gain access to your subconscious
and, through the natural process of free association, uncover these
bottled-up emotions and release them once and for all. With these
hidden feelings gone there is no longer any internal anxiety and no
longer any phobia, nor the risk that your fears will just manifest
themselves in a different way.
If
you like to arrange an initial consultation to discuss your problems
and the treatment in more detail call Emma on 07760 996043 or email emma@malvernhypnotherapy.com. Your call will be handled discreetly and in strictest confidence.
